Bay Galvanizers 10 years of service excellence

Bay Galvanizers recently held a 10 year birthday celebration function at the Blue Marlin Guest house in Richards Bay and it was attended by management, staff and customers.

Carey & Lee

All dressed up for the occasion

Short History of the plant

Hot Dip Galvanizing Process has been around for many years and has served the steel industry with its robust coating and excellent Corrosion protection and 10  years ago Bay Galvanizers started operating in Richards Bay with a small 3 m kettle but soon became too small and shortly a new bigger 5m Kettle arrived and was installed.

In 2005 the plant was sold to Don Voysey & Russell Welsh and from day one it was an uphill battle as the plant had not been maintained properly and the general safety of the plant was of a very low standard.

To get the plant up to standard the entire building structure was refurbished. The salvageable process tanks were refurbished and new tanks were manufactured from high tech materials for the ones that were scrapped. A lot of general process improvements were also carried out in the plant to increased plant through put.

The entire yard was paved as it used to be a bit of a mud bath during the rainy season and we sorted out all the storm water problems which used to cause us huge headaches every time there was a down pour.

We also upgrade the fork lift with a new one and purchased a new 7 ton drop side for all the collection and deliveries. We now have a fleet of 4 well maintained trucks which carry out collection and deliveries.

By doing all these improvements and capital investments in the plant we eventual started seeing the benefits of increased production and quicker through put in the galvanizing process.

The other huge problem with organization was the Health and Safety systems which were very poor and the LTI frequency was not good with a lot of injuries in the plant.

To get the health and safety on track we implemented a lot of basic safety systems and were assisted by the Master Builders Association.

After a two year struggle with getting the safety up to standard we started to see the rewards and we are proud to announce that on the 16 January 2010 we have been working 3 full years without a LTI and in January 2010 were again audited by the MBA and received our 5 star MBA safety grading.

Bay Galvanizing is a relatively small plant but our success over the last 10 years and especially over the last 5 years has been as a direct result of the dedication and commitment of the entire Bay Galvanizing team.

The management and staff are passionate about the business and more than ever to have happy customers and we will do what it takes to keep our customers happy and committed to continuing doing business with Bay Galvanizing. We do not like losing a customer for whatever reason.
